Passionfruit Lilikoi

Passion fruit, scientifically known as passiflora edulis, is a vine species of the passion flower. It is usually native to Southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Northern Argentina.

This fruit comes in different varieties that are usually differentiated based on their appearances. Some are bright yellow such as the flavicarpa variety, also known as yellow or golden passionfruit.

This passion fruit can grow up to the size of a grapefruit with a smooth and glossy rind. It also has a dark purple variety that is smaller than a lemon, less acidic, and has a richer aroma and taste.

Different countries have local names for passion fruit. Check out this list.

  • In Hawaii, this fruit is known as lilikoi. It is usually cut in half and the seeds are scooped out with a spoon. The popular lilikoi-flavored syrup is also one of the Hawaiians favorites when it comes to shaved ice and other dessert flavorings such as malasadas, cheesecakes, and mochi. Some locals also make passion fruit jam which is the perfect go-to spread for bread.
  • In Colombia, it is called maracuya and is essential in juices and desserts.
  • In the Dominican Republic, it is locally called chinola and is also used in making desserts and juices.
  • In Indonesia, this fruit is known as markisa which is the best source of juice and other desserts too.

Passion fruit contains a lot of antioxidants such as beta carotene and polyphenols.
